My Rail Bike

My son Sam sitting on the "side car" I added to my Rail BikeBack in the 1990’s I was at a party with some friends and we started to talk about rail bikes … something to ride on railroad tracks.  That night I sketched out an idea on a napkin and took it home that night.  I hung the napkin in my office, and seldom even thought of it until one day … going through Home Depot … when I saw some angle steel and realized “I could make my rail bike with that!”

I went to my local rail road tracks, measured them, and built a “jig” out of 2x4s that I could use to build my rail bike frame on.  I measured some approximate dimensions and bought the steel … bolted it together … and this is what I got!

I rode the rail bike several times on some local tracks, before adding the side car this past year so that my son could ride with me.

Sam and I about to go for a ride! The frame is designed so that I can easily place it on the tracks, and then place my mountain bike on the frame – front tire on the frame, back tire on the track – and then attach it with a U-bolt and some velcro.  It is *amazing* how easy it is to ride, and pick up speed …

… and night time rides are the BEST!
